Corten steel: its multiple uses from decoration to architecture

Corten Steel: flower pots, gates, facade cladding, the Corten can be used everywhere

When we talk about Corten Steel, in our region, we quickly think of the Soulages Museum in Rodez.

Corten steel is a self-patinated steel with forced surface corrosion, used for its appearance and resistance to atmospheric conditions, in architecture, construction and art mainly in outdoor sculpture.

Raw materials have always been appreciated by architects.

The Corten, which has the appearance of a rusty steel, but without degrading, enhances its environment. In addition, its ocher color gives beautiful colorations when lit by the setting sun.

In the case of the Soulages Museum, “The Corten steel whose patina bears the mark of time fits perfectly into the plant environment of the park. It is not an inert and sanitized material. Moreover, its chromaticism is reminiscent of the pink sandstone of Rodez “, explained RCR architects in 2008. The nuances of this steel also evoke the work of Pierre Soulages.

Near us, OSI Design, in Vauvert, one of our partners, has become a master in the use of Corten, especially for the creation of his flower boxes. Benoit Gillet architect, in Calvisson, also uses Corten steel,  (gates, facade cladding, footbridge, landscaping, staircase …).

We like corten steel

Deco idea: our favorite chair of the moment

S 33 cantilever chair in chromed steel tube with leather seat and back. An icon of twentieth century design.

In the prestigious Bahaus school, in the 1920s, the greatest artists and designers of the beginning of the century will teach the younger generations drawing, architecture and the visual arts, or simply collaborate with the famous institute. Among them, big names, such as Marcel Breuer, Wassily Kandinsky, Le Corbusier, Franck Lloyd Wright, or Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Marcel Breuer and Mart Stam will collaborate and design models of chairs with no feet at the back (cantilever chair) using tubular steel. The cantilever cantilever chair or sled base chair, a kind of cantilever suspension chair with no rear legs, is considered one of the most important 20th century discoveries in the field of design.

And we love it! Don’t you?
