SOLD – My cabin at the end of the garden: Wooden house near Sommieres

Wood house, panoramic view on edge of wild zone near Pic Saint Loup

For nature lovers !

Between Sommieres and Quissac: on 4500m2 of hillside, a 95m2 wooden house with  an 48m2 annexe.

Joelle and Olivier, two Parisians who love the Gard and came on holiday every summer first acquired the land to camp there in a hut; over the years the hut acquired a tower; then the hut with a tower got its annexe. . .

Joelle, scenographer designed the ‘hut’ siting it with particular attention so as to preserve the magnific view up the valley and of the Pic Saint Loup.  Priority has been given to opening wide the living areas and limiting visual impact.

The house is on the flat but at the top of the land.

The main room still feels like a ‘hut’ connected to the landscape and the surrounding nature.

The ‘tower’ contains a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor, while upstairs is a ‘dormitory’ with a magnificent view of the surrounding countryside.  The annexe, separated , offers isolation either to play music or to receive family and friends

The house and its annexe are a perfect as a holiday home, a break from bustling city life or, after renovation, as a principal house.  Perfect for nature lovers, who wish for calm and a simple life far from the town.

15 mins to Sommiers, 10 to Quissac, 35 to Nimes and 50 mins to Montpellier

Our favorite for a panoramic view on edge of wild zone

Le Patio: Village house with flowered courtyard near Sommières

Demeure house with courtyard in the center of a Gard village halfway between Nîmes and Montpellier – A perfect choice for tourism project

Love at first sight… for a PATIO?! Yes! Dominique and Yann were looking for somewhere to live in the South of France, then magic took place. As soon as they entered the vast patio they fell for its welcoming meridional charm, the Andalusian basin over-shadowed by a vine trellis. What better for a change of life than the cool calm of the place?!

Life on the patio: breakfast in spring on a stone terrace, cooling ones feet in the pool during summer heat or again a glass with friends in the cool of the evening on the wood deck beside the enormous Yucca.

A few kilometers from Sommières the stone building has known many lives; former farm, presbyter then restaurant, a perfect choice for a tourist hotel.

Dominique and Yann develop their project, re-think the decoration of the rooms so as to receive friends and guests. The house has EIGHT bedrooms! The other rooms have been conserved as they were for the pleasure of those who appreciate old stone walls and friendly small spaces.

The dwelling is situated in the center of a Gard village halfway between Nîmes and Sommières. It measures 320m2 (and additional technical areas). It is centered around the patio which leads off to all the many other rooms:

  • The north wing: on the first floor a passageway leads to three independent suites, on the ground floor a kitchen/dining-room for guests and at garden-level yet another suite giving onto the patio.
  • The south wing: the ground floor consists of a small drawing room, a dining room, a kitchen with its dedicated technical space and another small living room with a fireplace. On the first floor two suites (one gives on to a passageway) and an office/spare bedroom.
  • The west wing: the ground floor has a small living room with a big fireplace, its vaulted opening giving onto the courtyard, upstairs there is another suite.

There remain multiple possibilities the building lends itself to a tourism project such as a guest house/restaurant.

Nîmes and Sommières: 20 mins drive, motorway entry: 5mins, Montpellier: 20mins, Avignon: 45mins, seaside: 30 mins, Uzès and its traditional market: 50mins, Bambouseraie of Anduze: 1h.

Our favorite for the PATIO obviously! You can just imagine yourself glass-in-hand with friends. A house for all lovers of an old-fashion welcome.

La maison de Ramonétage : Dwelling in a former vineyard near Sommieres

House on the south side updated by an architect near Nîmes and Sommières

The oppidum Mouressipe overlooks a steep valley where all the trees of the garrigue abound. The presence of springs and a clay soil gave birth to The Vaunage known in ancient Gaelic as ‘the great clearing’.

Were Beatrice and her architect husband inspired by the presence of these venerable yews?

Their house, an integral part of an estate situated in a vast park of centenary  trees, is a short distance from the medieval town of Sommieres and near Nimes, roman origin.  The stone building consists of an interior, 220m2, completely renovated by a Swiss architect; the exterior, 560m2, is private with garden, terrasse and courtyard. But it is all possible to swim in the pool, drink a cocktail at the pool house, wander through the park or sit dreaming on one of the stone benches as the house is in partial co-property with the Domaine.

The renovation is intemporal :  the historic building, the views, the noble building materials, wood beams, tile floors, all have been conserved.

Up a flight of stone steps into the long west-facing main room with its generous fireplace.  A French window gives onto the terrasse and intimate garden.  The dining area is opposite on the east side with views over the hill, park and surrounding countryside.  The parental suite is also on this floor.

On the last floor (level 3) there are, in succession, a bedroom (window to the west), an office (window facing east onto the view), a bathroom, and a large bedroom (low window to the south overlooking the park).

The ground floor consists of two restored vaulted cellars in line, now used as a storage area but open to all possibilities.  Finally hidden in a discreet backyard, an office, obviously designed by an architect, a quiet space to read, listen to music, study….  Finally, a utility and a boiler room complete the whole.

Sommieres :15 mins .  Nîmes: 25 mins. Entrance Montpellier 45 mins

Our favorite for the privilege of life on a Domaine, simplicity shared, the peacefulness of a park

What about a wine bar? : Restored wine-grower’s cellar in village near Aigues-Mortes

‘Le Chai’  in a  medieval village :  a castle, a canal, vineyards, meadows, horses and bulls roaming on the marshlands, nature reserve and the sea nearby.  Not only history and nature but also culture: concerts, folklore, art both ancient and modern! Everything!!!

And… Why not a wine-cellar in the sitting-room as well!? … Done!

A glass roofed wine reserve/display under the living-room. From the outside this stone-built house with its little garden beside the canal gives nothing away of the audacious interior renovation. First, an inside living unit prolonged by the second, exterior, where the roof has been removed to provide a courtyard with swimming pool protected by the high outside walls.  80m2 for a truly inside\outside lifestyle.

The underground wine cellar is visible by transparency through the living area floor.  An open space concept :  kitchen, sitting room, dining-area, ‘vinotheque’ mezzanine and the outside courtyard all interconnected ; flooded with natural light the ground floor also offers an office and scullery.

A stone staircase to the mezzanine offers a view of the cathedral ceiling, wooden beams and the spectacular iron center light fixture.  A staircase/bookshelf gives access to the hidey hole/cabin/play place under the beams.  The night space is behind the mezzanine: two bedrooms and bathroom with a view over the canal.

A garage completes the whole, entrance from the street through a high iron gate.

A railway station in village connects to Nimes and the station at Le Grau du Roi. The beaches :  20 mins. Nimes/Montpellier:  30mins. Arles:  35 mins

Our favorite for :  the welcoming volumes for fun and friends and of course the ‘vinotheque’
